The Takeaway

Henry Fall here from the Milo Lines Academy, joined by LPGA Tour's Dana Finkelstein. Today, we're diving into a crucial element of your golf swing – the takeaway. This initial move sets the stage for a successful swing, and we're here to guide you through it.

When it comes to the takeaway, we often see golfers struggle with two common issues: a club getting too far inside or excessively outside. Both stem from a disconnection of the left arm from the body. The key? Connection. Your arms and body should move together, forming a unified pivot.

Imagine a Y-shape formed by your shoulders, forearms, and grip. As you start your backswing, maintain this connection while allowing a slight wrist hinge. To enhance your takeaway, try exercises like placing a ball between your forearms or a glove under your armpit. Another effective drill involves swinging the club while keeping it close to your sternum or belly button.

For those looking at it from a down-the-line perspective, using a plane stick can help maintain the club in front of you during the takeaway, ensuring a smooth turn and wrist hinge.

Remember, nailing the takeaway is the foundation for a consistent and powerful swing. Practice these techniques, and watch your game soar to new heights!
